The Friends would like to express our sincere thanks to
our amazing staff, dedicated volunteers, and all of the Dearborn
Animal Control Officers, police officers, and fire fighters who
assisted with the rescue of over 100 Chihuahuas from an
uninhabitable house. We also would like to thank the media for
providing coverage and helping spread the word of the need for assistance and to all of you who, our community, who have responded
with donations, bringing supplies to the shelter, submitting
adoption applications, and offers to volunteer.

The rescue began on a Thursday -- July 23.
A
neighbor had phoned the shelter to report a stray cat in a
neighbor's yard. Dearborn Animal Control Officer, Jenny
Jackson, found not only a litter of kittens, but also a small
Chihuahua locked in a box. She knew something was wrong and
returned with back-up and a warrant.
This is Friends Shelter Manager, Heather Mehi
who participated in the rescue.
This little dog jumped into her arms when she opened
a closet door
where he had been confined.
She named him Pudge and he now
lives with her.

A week later, on a Thursday - July 30, the dogs were released to the Friends and these wonderful pups celebrated by playing in grass and seeing the sun for the first time. Unfortunately, it also was the day that the last three (3) dead dogs were found in the house, bringing that total to 168. |
